Vidígueira is one of the cooler Alentejo sub-regions with cool Atlantic air funnelled inland through a gap in the surrounding mountains. The vineyards are planted on rolling hills and 12 different soil types have been identified. The predominance of limestone controls vine vigour and lends elegance to the wines. Grapes were cooled before pressing to preserve maximum aromatics. The grapes were then de-stemmed and very gently pressed. The juice was cool fermented in stainless steel tanks at 16ºC for 18 days. The wine is unoaked and was kept in stainless steel for three months more before it was fined, filtered, cold-stabilised and then bottled.
Winemaker Luís Cabral de Almeida has a wealth of global experience. He emphasises minimal intervention. Precision viticulture is carried out on the estate and each grape variety has been matched to its ideal plot. Luís was delighted with the smaller grapes from a dry summer, yielding concentrated flavour and structure.
Portuguese whites like this make excellent partners for seafood; especially white fish and shellfish.
The Alentejo region is hot and dry, yet it makes excellent white wine from the Antão Vaz and other local grapes. It is thick skinned, known for its acidity and tropical fruitiness, and reminiscent of a lightly oaked Chardonnay.
Alentejo is southerly and inland. Distinct soils (granite, limestone, Mediterranean or schist), the long hours of exposure to the hot sun and a group of indigenous grape varieties enable the production of some great wines. Whites are aromatic, fresh and balanced, and the red wines - ruby or garnet coloured are more intense, full-bodied and smooth.
