In this ancient winemaking region the winemakers are focused on creating wine that’s true to the place. The Autumn brought rain, and temperatures stayed seasonal until a February cold spell. Spring, slightly cool and slow, favoured good flowering and fruit set. Despite April-May's cool, rainy weather, fruit development thrived. A brief August heatwave led to water stress, but recovery ensued by harvest. Yields surpassed 2021 by 10%, boasting excellent quality. Grapes underwent gentle pressing and fermentation at 10°C in steel tanks to preserve the aromas. The wine was matured on lees in stainless steel tanks. The result? A complex highly rated white wine.
Valentino Sciotti took over this small co-operative in Acerenza inspired by its beauty and isolation. The low-trained vineyards are situated on the volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture at altitudes of up to 800 metres above sea level. Valentino and winemaker Alberto Antonini capture the character of the grapes and the soil in the finished wine.
The crispness of Greco combined with Fiano’s creaminess make it a versatile partner for creamy pasta and seafood, especially shellfish.
Southern Italy produces fascinating white wines. There, millennia-old native grapes like Fiano and Greco dominate. Scrupulous vineyard management and modern vinification methods yield wonderful, fuller, savoury white wines.
Seafaring Greeks first planted vines in this hidden part of southern Italy and they are now producing some exciting wines. Vineyards on steep volcanic slopes enjoy cooler climes and mineral soils. Fiano and Greco are two key grape varieties from here with complimentary characteristics. Having become known for bulk, the region is fighting back with some truly excellent wines. This highly rated white wine is very much one!
