The Vesevo vineyards are situated from 450 to 700 metres above sea level and are subject to a constant cool breeze that blows off the Bay of Naples. Over the centuries, this same breeze has blown volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius inland, to give the soil here a volcanic character.

Aglianico, an ancient grape, thrives on the warm, dry volcanic slopes. In the 2022 vintage, the mild winter and a warm, dry summer led to concentrated flavours and excellent quality grapes. Night harvesting preserved delicate fruit character, and fermentation at 26°C for 15 days ensured a robust foundation. The wine matured for 8 months in oak barrels, resulting in an outstanding wine.

The Vesovo winery opened in 2000 takes its name from the nearby volcano that influences all local wines. Winemakers Antonio Melone and Marco Flacco use a single indegenous grape, and meld modern science with traditional methods to make this wine.

Dark, complex Aglianico complements robust dishes rich in aromas, such as baked lamb, Florentine-style ribs, or legume soups. It stands up well to grilled peppers, and cheeses like Parmesan.

Basilicata's slightly cooler climate suits Aglianico, yielding garnet wines with robust tannins and acidity. Initially harsh, they mature into elegant complexity, offering delicious plum flavours with a touch of chocolate, vanilla or spice.

Inland from the bay of Naples with volcanic soils, there are many wonderful indigenous grape varieties here. Different winemaking traditions and styles define each region. The wines are often less expensive than their famous Northern cousins. The hot climate is reflected in the wines; especially full bodied, warm, and fruity red wines based on Primitivo and Nero d’Avola.
